Food Crisis Appeal: The Latest News

Last July we launched the Food Crisis Appeal.

“COVID, conflict, social unrest and natural disasters have all contributed to the current crisis.” Compassion’s Chief Programme Officer, Sidney Muisyo explains:

“Children in poverty remain especially vulnerable to the mounting [global food] crisis. There is the risk of severe undernourishment, which also makes children in poverty very vulnerable to developing dangerous, life-threatening diseases. The crisis also increases the chances that they will be exploited or kept from pursuing their education.”

The situation facing millions of families is desperate.

But with your support, Compassion is responding

Your support is having an immense impact on Compassion’s local response to the Food Crisis facing millions across the globe. Your generosity has been empowering our church partners to take action and tackle food insecurity in their local communities.

Thanks to your donations, we've been able to provide emergency food and financial assistance to those in need.

To date:

  • 183,164 families have received food packs, benefitting an estimated 801,000 individuals.
  • 20,071 households have been given cash transfers to empower parents and caregivers to make decisions about the best way to support their families.
  • In addition, 12,013 households have been provided with agriculture support.
  • 7,629 households have been equipped with sanitation and hygiene resources.

Our church partners have also been working to build long-term food resilience in their communities. In Peru, for example, we've been able to build greenhouses for families affected by drought, allowing them to grow food and protect it from the volatile elements.

We've also provided agriculture support, including the distribution of seeds, fertilisers, livestock, and training on building and maintaining home gardens and small-scale farms. And where needed, we've equipped families with sanitation resources, including soap and safe water supplies.

The difference a food package makes

In Togo, Aboni Papa's and Ayitevi Abla's family livelihood has been severely threatened by the food crisis. When they cannot afford food, Ayitevi Abla shares how “the only thing I can do is bless water, give it to them [my children] to drink and reassure them that brighter days will come.”

Watch the film sharing one family’s testimony of the difference emergency food and financial assistance has made.

Could you support a family like Aboni Papa and Ayitevi Abla’s today? Your donation of  €61 could provide food packs to feed a family of six for two months.
